This sites of Palenque and Tonina are particularly useful to use as a case study because of the large number of portraits that were carved, modeled, or painted on monumental architecture there. Furthermore, advancements in our understanding of the ancient Maya language make it possible to translate a substantial number of hieroglyphic inscriptions from the sites. The visual and textual richness of these sites make them especially suitable to support many kinds of investigations.  Below are slideshows of select images from the sites.
